Thomas Tuchel Questions Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater encouragement from the Wembley spectators during their commanding 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday evening.
The manager was satisfied to see his team continue their strong performance, with finishes from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter effectively ending the match. Yet, he was displeased with the atmosphere at the iconic venue.
“We had one and a half training days to get ready against a organized team and we did very well,” the coach commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional ones. There was little noise. There was no support from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you give in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the squad warranted greater backing today.”
“I support my words. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a derby. I hoped for a little more backing in phases where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but that’s football and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Justified by Performance
Away from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. Yet the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers delivering another standout performance in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his spot.”
Bellamy Hopes for Improvement from Defeat
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a important qualifying match on next week, improve after their poor first-half display.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” the manager commented. “I need to see our current level. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? This performance fills me with motivation.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was taken off at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and will be a doubt when England play their next opponents in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
