To mark the 250th anniversary of America's independence, the treasury department is exploring the minting of a $1 coin showing former President Donald Trump with a raised fist under an US flag and the words “fight, fight, fight”.

Historical Reference

This inscription overtly refers to what Trump declared immediately after surviving an assassination attempt several months before he secured a second term.

Public Announcement

US Treasurer Brandon Beach shared a preliminary design of the coin on recently via an online platform, commenting: “This is genuine. These designs celebrating America’s 250th birthday and [Trump] are legitimate.”

The post – which boosted another commentator commenting on the draft design – indicated that Beach looked “eager to provide updates” after the conclusion of the temporary shutdown that began after midnight Wednesday when opposition lawmakers demanding concessions on medical care and other spending priorities withheld the support necessary to pass a GOP-supported budget proposal.

Legal Background

As noted, in 2020, at the conclusion of his first administration, Trump enacted bipartisan legislation permitting the treasury secretary to issue $1 coins during the year 2026 that are “emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial”.

Appearance Components

The obverse of the coin on whose proposed design Beach commented this week showed Trump’s likeness alongside “Liberty”, “Our Trust in God”, and “1776–2026”.

The reverse alluded to the effort to harm Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania last year, when authorities said a gunman injured Trump’s ear and injured two others before being fatally shot by the Secret Service.

Trump raised his fist after the attack – one of two attempted assassinations for him as he successfully ran for a return to the White House in 2024 – and shouted, “Fight, fight, fight!” with an national banner prominent nearby.

Department Comment

A comment from a treasury department spokesperson stated that the draft which Beach’s X post discussed was not the “final $1 coin design”. But the comment asserted that “this concept reflects well the enduring spirit of our nation and republic, even in the wake of immense obstacles”.
